POPSHOP029: JAKWOB + LITTLE DAYLIGHT

As summertime radness reaches its festive climax in the coming months, we're keeping the Popshop glory rolling right on through the dog days of August. Coming in hot and humid August 1st, we have the live debut of local new kids on the block ASTR, as well as the much-anticipated return of Australia's Strange Talk to the Neon Gold stage in the main support slot. Then it's a knockout one-two punch of co-headliners, as rising superstars Little Daylight launch their debut Tunnel Vision EP (out August 6th) in the live headline slot, before UK club maestro Jakwob shuts things down as our DJ headliner. It's going down on Thursday August 1st at our Santos Party Home, with $10 advance tickets now available HERE. Until The Ribbon Breaks first shattered our senses with debut single "Pressure" earlier this year, and now he's back with another backbreaking showstopper in the form of future hit, "2025". With a stark cinematic intro like the beginnings of an epic war, UTRB's crusade for truth and pop glory affords him a flowing cape and grim weaponized beats. All soul-soothing vocals and warped electronics, its arrival is accompanied by yet another homemade video for the ages, as The Ribbon further establishes himself as one of the most exciting new acts to emerge this year.

Last week's Popshop West with Kate Boy and Lovelife was one for the ages, and we've got another power bill lined up for you next month featuring an entirely homegrown cast of LA's finest new acts. Opening things up, we have support from local upstarts Dead Times alongside pop noir newcomer Jaymes Young, both making their respective LA live debuts. Then in the headline slot, we've got alt-radio soothsayers Night Terrors of 1927 keeping you up late into the night. If you couldn't tell, we're getting deep into Smallpools this summer. The LA outfit has been soundtracking our sunshine in a major way these past few weeks, and now Charli XCX and Twin Idol have come together to remix their gatecrashing debut single "Dreaming," giving the original a spaced-out intergalactic makeover. Smallpools play their debut live show with us on Popshop Brooklyn next month, before heading out on the road with San Cisco on their debut tour. Trust us, you're gonna want to keep a CLOSE eye on this lot.

Our fondness for Sweden's native brand of frosted pop is well documented, and today we're pleased to introduce you to their latest offering, Sirena. Street name Elsa Carmina, the Barcelona-born singer ushers in a tidal wave of exotic heat on debut single "Love Is Not". As undulating synths ring their way around your finger, her lovelorn voice resonates like the smoking pixie fireball of Lykke Li with the rapturous homespun afterlife of Ms Mr. There's no expiration date on this one, but you're gonna wanna get familiar with Sirena as soon as possible.

We first introduced you to New York's own ASTR a few months ago and now we're back with a brand new remix of debut single, "Operate," by local DJ duo The Chainsmokers. After lighting up remixes for Say Lou Lou and Little Daylight in recent weeks, it comes as no surprise that their latest doesn't stop burning either. The Smokers drop the original in a platinum vat of homegrown house, and it grows into a massive glimmering asteroid of a dance party anthem hurtling toward you. When it hits, it destroys.

Our latest Popshop Brooklyn with HAIM and Kate Boy was on a whole new level of amazing, and now we're back to keep the magic rolling into July with another show-stopping bill. In the supports, we're importing a fresh breeze of West Coast heat with the international live debut of LA's young kings, Smallpools, alongside the Brooklyn debut of Shaun White's very own Bad Things. Then headlining we've got local legends and veteran Popshop allstars Ghost Beach, taking us deep into the night with their blissed-out tropical electronics. After crushing it for years with their two-piece DJ + electric violin setup, Mia Moretti and Caitlin Moe make the jump to the next level on their debut single as The Dolls, "Summer of '93". It's an armful of buzzing synths and star-crossed harmonies as strings-and-vox maestro Caitlin Moe displays a vocal talent we never saw coming. It's a nostalgic headrush - like 2013's very own "Genie In A Bottle" - and the perfect soundtrack to this impossibly 90's summer we're currently basking in, so be sure to come out early to see the girls light up the beach at Full Moon next weekend.

Our fairy dark princess, MØ, has dropped the second proper video of her career for new single "Waste of Time". As the cable-knit tune unravels in a moody starburst of living color, the video is a heady mix of calming slo-mo and hair-whipping bravado. Yet another checkmate from our best mates, Chess Club. ATTENTION WORLD: Grouplove is back to save your summer from the rainy doldrums of yesterweek with brand new single "Ways to Go", easily the most important song you'll hear all year. From the gatecrashing synths to the euphoric tag-team chorus and hippie dictator video, it's about to rule your summer with an iron fist. Resistance is futile.

SMILING OUT OF FEAR.

We profiled Kiwi child prodigy Lorde back in February and we've only fallen further down the rabbit hole of infatuation since. With new single "Tennis Court", Ella Yelich-O'Connor manages to volley between the luscious full-bodied hooks of Lana del Rey and the bubblegum-popping insouciance of Charli XCX. As her flowing vocals lock lips with your ears, the white-hot reflective synths melt you to a pulp and the rest is high school history. Still only a handful of songs into her adolescent career, Lorde has already established herself as Australasia's next great hope for pop glory, and she couldn't have come at a more perfect time. Crushing hard.

STARS + STRIPES FESTIVAL 2013

If you've been following us these past few years, you're likely familiar with our annual salute to America on July 4th weekend, Stars + Stripes. If not, keep up. With the help of some of our favorite bands, we've managed to raise over $60,000 for the Martha's Vineyard YMCA as Stars + Stripes I and II saw everyone from Chiddy Bang and The Knocks to Grouplove and Alex Winston throwing down for the cause. And this year we're looking to top the $30,000 benchmark set in previous years with our biggest lineup yet (*cue Flux Pavilion's "I Can't Stop"*).

On Saturday July 6th, we're back for Stars + Stripes III with indie superstars Walk the Moon riding a tidal wave of breathless hype and critical acclaim onto the island shores; alongside our ever radiant golden boy, St. Lucia; the always lovely, always brilliant HAERTS; and last but not least, the newest member of our Neon Gold family, Magic Man. The Swedish shadow kids make their US debut at Popshop NYC this Thursday, before their completely sold out Popshop BK show Saturday, and their LA debut next Monday at Popshop West. And to top it all off, their newest video for "The Way We Are" arrives today, the perfect vessel for their irresistible tundra-fox-meets-jungle-cat blend of pop prowess and hedonistic energy. Self-produced and self-directed, it's a striking visual composition that looks like The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo zoning in and out of reality.
