New York bright young things Noosa arrive on the scene with a flurry of promising tracks and a bona fide anthem in waiting on debut single "Walk On By". Leading lady Sky Barbarick's vocal brings to mind everything from the pop noir nicotine of Lana Del Rey to the quirky effortlessness of Kimbra and doe-eyed wonder of Laura Veirs, as it sits perfectly atop an instrumental that delicately treads the line between heartbreaking lows and skyscraping highs. It's five minutes of heaven and hell and everything in between; keys fall like angels and strings swell and tear at your heartstrings, dripping with summertime sadness and a wistful melancholy that stays with you long after the song's run its course.

West Coast mystery kids The Neighbourhood arrive on the scene out of nowhere with not one, but two incredible tracks to their name, swinging for the fences and beyond on their first at bat. Taking their hooky brand of California indie and infusing it with slick hip hop production, it's the kind of thing you might expect if Cold War Kids made a record in Lana Del Rey's universe.

Tolling bells and desperate shouts set the scene on the Lynchian undertaking that is "Female Robbery", before the slow reveal introduces the weaponized guitars and empire-toppling Massive Attack production that drives the song towards its fatalist conclusion. They follow it up with "Sweater Weather" today and raise the bar even higher, as crooned vocals flow breezily over a cozy bassline before going doubletime on a supercharged chorus that rewires your entire emotional thermostat. It's a debut one-two punch the likes of which we haven't heard in ages, and when a stammering, stuttering Zane Lowe comes in at the end of the "Sweater Weather" radio rip, you can't blame him; this is shock and awe. Best to get on the bandwagon now then, as this lot look set to take over in a big way in the months to come, one neighborhood at a time.

Surf noir. We've no idea what it is really, but still it seems a pretty apt description for NYC via New Jersey songwriter Lana Del Rey. All femme fatale lyrics and rampant nostalgia for the kitschy Americana of yesteryear, Lana's tracks hook you with a sultry approach to pop songwriting that sets her apart from her peers in this city. The icing on the cake is her homemade music videos, which unravel like a parade of influences that serve as a mission statement for what it is Del Rey's all about, and you can view the clip she's put together for "Diet Mtn Dew" - our favorite track of hers to this point - above. While it's clear she's still trying to find her sound and pin down her sonic identity, "Diet Mtn Dew" shows she's got all the necessary components to turn serious heads in the months to come, and those at The Great Escape next week would be amiss not to check her out at the Gold Dust showcase Thursday night. She's also going into the studio with our dudes The Knocks upon her return from the UK and, as anyone whose heard their recent output knows, that can only mean good things. Watch this space.
