NEON GOLD PRESENTS: NEW SHAPES // CMJ 2012

Another year, another CMJ, and that means another star-studded double-decker New Shapes blowout at Santos Party House. If you were on the front lines with us last year, you experienced the US live debut of Gotye and oh so much more. And this year - as always - we're looking to go even bigger, as we team up with our UK brothers-in-arms, National Anthem and Chess Club, to bring you the show to end all shows Thursday night at Santos.

Upstairs, we have Brooklyn heartthrobs Lovelife, synth-noirists Citizens!, electro-superstars Strange Talk, UK stadium-indie rockers Morning Parade, and west coast supergroup extraordinaire JJAMZ. This all before headlining beauties Icona Pop shut it down in the coveted headline slot, an honor claimed by Gotye, Grouplove and Theophilus London in years past. Downstairs, we've got newborn ruffians Busy Living, Brit-crooner Gabriel Bruce, jungle-pop Aussies Jinja Safari, and west coast sunkids Pacific Air and Blondfire, before Sky Ferreira and Capital Cities closing the night out in style.

All this for the impossibly low price of $5 advance, $10 day of show, plus free entry for a limited number of CMJ badges (so arrive early!). Mark your calendars for 6pm sharp on October 18th and get your advance tickets HERE, this is one for the history books.

BACKED BY THE SILVER OF A FRIVOLOUS LIFE.

YesYou are the latest Australian act to wash over us and leave us breathless with bated exhales. The synthsational duo of Jono Kirkham and Gav Parry first breezed across our radar last June with debut single "Half of It" - still a jam one year on - but now they've returned with a new single featuring Marcus Azon of Jinja Safari, a band we've already featured in these pages and whose latest single "Toothless Grin" has been in steady rotation at Neon Gold HQ all summer long. "Frivolous Life" is a triumph for everyone involved, as Azon's sky-flying vocals take off into the night on the golden-tipped wings of YesYou's smoother-than-silk production. Together, they effortlessly surf the falsetto void, dancing a fine line between the shimmer and shake of Foster The People and the iridescent ooh-ooh's of Yeasayer. Carefree? Yes. Frivolous? Hardly.

TELL YOUR SHADOW WHAT TO DO.

Storybook escapism is pretty much the name of the game with Australia's Jinja Safari, and nowhere is this more evident than on debut single "Peter Pan". Nursery rhyme glockenspiels set the scene in the prelude, and when you open your eyes to take it all in, you're flying high above chimneys and treetops, as the mundanity of everyday life melts away below. All afropop rhythms and starry-eyed guitars, it's a bit like if Jonsi, Local Natives and The Dodos all met up in Neverland to give it all up and form their very own Animal Collective. It's inspired unironic folk pop, and a shot of fresh air that feels like basking in early teenhood bliss. They were a bristling force of nature at the Great Escape, so choose your adventure wisely and indulge in Jinja Safari. The band make their NYC debut this week at Mercury Lounge tomorrow night and Pianos on Wednesday, so get involved and experience the magic for yourself.
